Featuring keynote speaker Tom McNeal!

As a freshman in high school Tom McNeal’s dream was to be an extreme sports athlete who wouldn't need further education after high school. However, his participation in a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) helped him see the world differently.

During his career in Talent Acquisition and Workforce Development at Southern Company and Alabama Power he has read over 600,000 resumes, interviewed more than 20,000 applicants and hired approximately 3,000 people but unfortunately has ‘fired’ a few as well.

Tom’s expert insight around career preparation, resume writing and interviewing skills sets him apart. His candidness, humor and insight bring these topics alive in a way that students will remember.

Through his company ‘Bring The Message’, Tom brings stories of success and failure to help students overcome obstacles to achieve their dreams and build a solid foundation for a successful career and life.

National Service Project

TSA is affiliated with the American Cancer Society and the TSA State officers have conducted a “Pennies for Pie” fundraiser the last few years in order to make a donation to ACS. This year we want to step up our efforts and let TSA members show their true character and raise five times more money than was collected last year.

So here is the deal. We donated $600 last year so I have challenged the officers and the members to collect $3,000 this year.  If they do so Papa Smurf will dye his beard blue and keep it blue through the National TSA Convention. I started my beard on January 1, so it will be 4 months of growth at conference time. Sadly, it looks more like Papa Smurf’s every day and it has a lot of white/gray in it anymore. So, it should make for a bright TSA blue when dyed.

The changes to “Pennies for Pie” are as follows:

First, we will be collecting chapter donations for ACS from your local chapter fundraising efforts. The chapter that donates the most money wins the opportunity to choose who will have the pleasure of putting a cream pie in the face of one of the state officers. Additionally, this year, that chapter also gets to choose 2 others to pie from their own chapter. This could be the advisor, any one of the chapter officers, or a chaperone if they so choose. The idea here is that you could conduct your own “Pennies for Pie” campaign and use loose change voting from now until conference time to help collect the funds for a portion of your chapter donation. Those checks should be made out to Alabama TSA and should be earmarked for “ACS Pennies or Pie”. These will be collected and tallied during registration.

The second part of “Pennies for Pie” are the voting buckets of each state officer. We thought we would make that process more fun and hopefully raise a larger donation by doing the following. All monies, paper or coins count as positive votes.

Then to cap off our evening entertainment we will suit up the two chosen chapter members from the winning chapter and the state officer with the most votes and deliver a big sloppy pie to the face of all three.

Remember, if our total monies collected are $3,000 or greater. I (Papa Smurf) will have my beard dyed Royal Blue/TSA Blue/Smurf Blue. We now have a staff member who is a Cosmetologist and she will dye my beard that evening for all to see on day two of the conference.
